The Empowering Songs and Stories of Women of Telangana in India.

Telangana has been celebrating the Bathukamma festival for more than five hundred years, and represents a rich oral tradition of Telugu folk songs narrating the life of Bathukamma and other village women in agrarian Indian society. This book is the first major publication on Bathukamma in English and is meant to reach the broader audience and Telugu community across the world. It aims to tell the rich cultural history of Bathukamma and her inherent relationship with nature and human world. The intellectual study of Bathukamma is also intended to draw the interest of students and scholars in the fields of women’s studies, and folk culture studies, anthropology, and Goddess traditions of India. Finally, this book is a tribute to the women song composers and singers of Bathukamma, and to millions of Telugu women, who celebrate the Bathukamma festival with joy and adoration of the Flower Goddess, who has in turn become the characteristic symbol of Telangana’s cultural heritage.
