ATA Women's Day - Washington DC Metro Area: March 8th 2015

ATA’s Washington DC Metro Region chapter celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8th 2015 at Chinmaya Somnath Center Chantilly, VA, more than 600 women and men attended this grand event.

The richness of this day highlighted the heritage of women around the world as well as the TELUGU women in the DC region. ATA DC Chapter celebrated WOMEN’S DAY for the third consecutive year.

The event began with a welcome note from ATA Joint Secretary, Mrs. Soumya Kondapalli. She pointed to the audience the increasing appreciation for Women’s Day with every passing year.

The event’s first item was from the students of 7 NotesIsai School, Arya Ganesan and Ramya Kurkul, who under the guidance of their teacher Smt. Radhika Rajesh sang songs in praise of Mother Divine.

Guest speakers Mrs. Manisha Singh, volunteer at DC chapter of Child Rights and You (CRY) spoke about child rights and explained how CRY is striving to help resources reach the needy; Mrs. Rajeshwari Tress, Bharatanatyam teacher and certified yoga trainer demonstrated a fusion dance and educated the audience on health benefits of dance and yoga; Mrs. Rupa Vasireddy, founding member of Asha-Jyothi, spoke about how their organization can help put together charitable event if requested. Mrs.Radhika Kowtha Rao, optometrist and blogger, shared her experiences as a woman in many different roles; Ms. Ashna Sharan, Miss Roanoke Valley 2013 and Miss Virginia Dogwood 2012, talked about the how beauty pageants provide scholarships and platform for girls to pursue their dreams.

The other highlights were the cultural performances: Nritya kalpana Dance School students performed the rhythmic Tillana; Nrityaki Dance Academy students enthralled the audience with Kathak Tarana and a customized dance, for the song from the movie Devdas; Students of Mrs.Radhika Reddy danced to a medley of Tollywood music; Singers Vinod and Harini sang special songs for Women and had the audience dancing on their feet to their music; Mrs.Meenal Jain, recited poetry composed in honor of women.

ATA thanked Mrs.Kavita Challa for coordinating with the food vendors, guests and personally preparing snacks for the event; Mrs.Srilekha Palle for being the point of contact for the vendors; Mrs.Nandini Yedula and Mrs. Priya Mallepally for the tailoring the Trivia questions and doing the raffle; Mrs.Manisha Singh for coordinating with the performers and helping put together a great event along with Mrs.Tripti Desai.
