ATA Women's Day - Maryland: March 15th 2015

American Telugu Association (ATA) Maryland chapter celebrated International Women’s day,) on March 15th, 2015 at Paradise Indian Cuisine, Gwynna Oak, MD.

Maryland women celebrated International Women’s Day with great enthusiasm and joy at an event organized by American Telugu Association (ATA). The event was graced with esteemed women from diverse walks of life representing but not limited to politicians, doctors, dancers, entrepreneurs and also distinguished guest from India, President of women’s wing of Andhra Sabha, Mumbai branch.

About 150 local women had a chance to meet and mingle with fellow women in a friendly atmosphere where they discussed and shared issues and mutual successes with the equal fervor. Mrs. Aruna Miller, Maryland's Legislative District 15 representative, gave an inspirational speech encouraging women and young adults to participate and get involved in political endeavors. She shared her story about how she got started and shared some pointers on how fellow women can start their journey into politics to influence policies that affect our community.

Many speakers at the event provided insight into common issues faced by women such as parents of young children, abuse, depression etc. Dr. Kamala Edwards shared her journey into the American society which started as early as 1920. She provided her insight into the changing times of the community in general and how she has been successfully navigating them.

The event was sprinkled with games, raffle draws, antyakshari and cultural activities that were enjoyed by one and all. The food served got special mention from many participants. 

The Women’s day events were coordinated by Anupama, Aprana, Padma, Madhavi, Pavani, Anitha, Srujana, Kavitha, Shamitha, Saraswathi, Vasu and Arundathi helped organize the event.
